What is the Food Hub?

The San Juan Islands Food Hub is an online marketplace for local food and agricultural products. Customers on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan can buy directly from farmers and food producers across the county on one convenient storefront and receive their orders at a weekly Wednesday pick-up on each island.

As a multi-stakeholder cooperative, our mission is to increase the production and sales of local food in San Juan County; support a viable agricultural economy, strengthen food security; and promote access to healthy, sustainably grown food.

Introducing Avalon Apiaries from Bellingham, WA! Anthony Pauly Jr., owner and operator, is offering a wide variety of PNW raised (organic practices) and harvested honey products along with mushroom tinctures to start, up to a few times a month. He carries additional products and offerings may expand as the partnership develops. Anythony is a beekeeper and considers himself a co-creator/producer of nature's sacred gifts, in addition he is a published author! John and Susan have green rhubarb! It started a little early this year and we suggest you act now to grab some; it’ll only be available until the end of May. However, rhubarb can be frozen in bulk amounts to enjoy throughout the year. Chop it into 1 inch pieces, put it in a plastic bag, and you’re ready to go! Additionally, you can cook it into a sauce and freeze to enjoy anytime with your breakfast. They’ve been growing rhubarb for over 25 years and now have over a hundred plants at JBS Farm on Orcas Island. Did you know that green rhubarb still has red on the stalk? It's known for being extra tasty and tender when compared with red rhubarb that has shorter, tougher stalks. Get inspired with rhubarb pudding cake, rhubarb ice cream, add it to drinks as a juice, or even try your hand at rhubarb ribbon candy. JBS Farm also has a variety of fruit trees, such as plums, apples, and pears, and Susan creates handmade soaps. Available in only a handful of places, we’re delighted they have some soap to share with the Food Hub right now while supplies last. John made the famous ferry boat soap mold himself. Welcome to Annie and Joel from Warm Valley Farm on Orcas Island. You may have noticed their chicken and duck eggs the last few weeks! They also raise sheep, and you can look forward to heritage breed pork in the fall, along with a market garden and orchard. The team likes to experiment and try new things alongside old favorites. Annie and Joel enjoy hosting Orcas Community Participatory Agriculture (OCPA) and having people learn how to farm and grow their own food. The program is still looking for 2024 participants! As a community farm, they care for 80 acres of land, and run a mini farmers market full of a variety of food products from 3-7pm on Wednesdays. They aim to create resiliency in a climate challenged world, regenerating healthy biodiverse ecosystems, nurturing our communities, and shifting agroecology into a future beyond fossil fuels. Joel did climate justice work with Greenpeace and they are dedicated to the biodiversity of plant and animal life on the farm, its soil health, and providing an abundance of healthy food to their incredible local community. Their practices include carbon sequestration in their forests and pasture lands. Actively composting all livestock waste and returning it to the soil in their market garden beds, and orchards. Using organic practices in all growing. Relying on broadforks and hand tools whenever possible to minimize soil disturbance. Utilizing pollinator gardens and patches, rotational grazing, crop rotation seasonally, and cover crops in the winter. Investing in solar infrastructure, delivery in a hybrid car, and striving to become carbon-neutral. 🫐🫐 Back by popular demand, for a limited time only! Families will have the option to order through the Food Hub using the SUN bucks program. SUN bucks is designed to help families buy food for their school- aged children during the summer. They will get $120 for each eligible child to buy groceries during the summer. Children who get SUN Bucks can still participate in other summer meal programs. Receiving SUN Bucks will not affect children or families’ immigration status. Apply by May 1st. Please let us know if you have any questions. The Food Hub accepts SNAP/EBT. Can’t miss this! Cajeta is a caramel sauce made with goat's milk. It is similar in color and thickness to dulce de leche. Originally from Mexico, it was used for crepes, but Lum Farm on Orcas Island use it for dipping or drizzling with fruit, on ice cream, in coffee, on pie, you name it! Keep refrigerated. In the hoop house the last of the overwintered Kale next to tomatoes that have just been put in the ground. Outside the Kale that survived that hard cold is sprouting new leaves and thinking about flowering. We will have limited Kale rab in a week or two. We are so thankful for the Kale and the few early herbs. This time of year is the hardest as far as food production goes. How it works:

  • Register using the green buttons above and see what’s available on the Food Hub right now. Yes, you can purchase from producers on other islands!
  • The order period is Friday-Sunday every week. Producers may add new products as they sell out of items or new quantities become available, so check back before the market closes on Sunday night to make sure you didn’t miss anything.
  • Producers harvest or prepare food on Monday/Tuesday, then deliver inter-island goods for transport.
  • Wholesale buyers can order once a week with delivery to their business by arrangement
  • Every Wednesday, retail buyers pick up their orders at their local distribution site:
    • 3:00-4:00pm at Taproot on Lopez (1008-C Dill Road, Lopez Island) Pick-up Wednesday any time after noon—or Tuesday afternoon if you don’t have items from Orcas. When you enter the driveway, park on the east side of the building. Come through the grey door with the SJIFH logo; your bag will be in the upright fridge to the left and any frozen items will be in the chest freezer beside it.
    • 5-6pm on Wednesday or 9am-6pm on Thursday at Orcas Food Co-op on Orcas (138 N Beach Road #913, Eastsound) The Food Hub space is located in the Provisions pick-up area south of the main Co-op building, accessed through the green door in the courtyard. You’ll receive a door code in your confirmation email that allows for self-service. Grab the order that’s labeled with your name from the Food Hub labeled fridge and any frozen items from the adjacent freezer. If you have issues finding the location, please speak to Co-op staff. 
    • 4:00-5:30pm at Brickworks on San Juan (150 Nichols Street, Friday Harbor). If you’re driving, please go up Sunshine Alley and wait for a turn to park along the Brickworks building. You’ll be asked for the name on your order and you’ll receive your items in a paper bag.
  • For any questions about your order, please email info@sjifh.com. Occasionally inter-island ferry transportation will interrupt the delivery schedule and we provide updated information about pick-up. Thanks for your understanding, and let us know if you have any questions!
  • Our staff follow careful food safety and public health protocols. Please follow directions to receive your order.
